| MAURICE
STRONG was born in Canada and a resident of Toronto.Mr.Strong has long-standing
ties with both the private and public sectors.
He served as the secretary-genaral of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment from November 1970 to December 1972,as director of the 1972 UN Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment,Mr.Strong successfully placed global environmental issues on the international agenda for the first time.The conference in Stockholm has come to be known as the first Earth Summit.And he subsequently became the first Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program(UNEP)in Nairobi,Kenya(January 1973-December 1975). He was then appointed President,Chairmen and
Chief Executive Officer of Canada¨ªs national oil company,Petro-Canada.He
also has been President of Power Corporation of Canada,first President
of the Canadian International Development Agency(CIDA),Chairman of the
Canada Development Until September 1992,Mr.Strong was Secretary General of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development(the Earth Summit)and Under-Secretary Gereral of the united Nations.During 1985 and 1986,he served as Under-Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Office for Emergency Operations in Africa and was a member of the World Commission on Environment and Development.Mr.Strong is perhaps most well-known for the role he played in organizing the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro(Earth Summit),Where he served as secretary-general.At Rio,he challenged the governments of the developed world to extend significant finacial aid¨®over $600 billion¨® to the developing world as reparation for a century of industrial development and the environmental degradation. From Devember 1992 until December 1995,Mr.Strong was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ontario Hydro,North America¨ªs largest utility.Then Mr.Strong was named Senior Advisor to the President of the World Bank in June 1995. |
